May Thyn Kyi is a filmmaker and director from Myanmar who creates art that reflects the problems, struggles, oppressions, and emotions of the people of Myanmar. She began working for a local news agency in 2018 before writing and creating photo stories for various women’s organizations. She was also an alumnus of National Geographic Photo Camp Myanmar. Eager to learn about the moving image, she enrolled at Yangon Film School in 2020, She studied film subjects for four years and while studying, she directed several short documentaries such as Shifting Sands (2020), Yellow’s Happiness Animation (2021), City Girls (2022), and Being Mon (2023). Shifting Sands documentary film was screened at the Ischia Film Festival and Seoul International Women’s Film Festival, and was nominated for the GAIA Student Award in Bozcaada International Festival of Ecological Documentary. It also won the TIBURON GOLDEN REEL award for Best Documentary Short at the 20th Tiburon International Film Festival in California. May Thyn Kyi also joined a YFS Travelling Cinema crew in Kengtung in Shan State as a participatory video facilitator. In 2022, she wrote her first short story called “Sunset” and was selected to attend the Purin Short Film Camp, which was funded by Netflix. She was chosen as the runner-up and got the opportunity to visit Platform Busan 2023. As the “ SUNSET” short film got a production grant and post-production grant from Rahta Entertainment and MEMORY’s Myanmar Short Film Fund, it was recently completed filming.
